Apps for mental health: guided meditation, mood journal, and breathing exercises.

Advertising - SpotAds

Guided meditation, mood journals, and break reminders are different tools. Choose the feature you want to use and the content available in Portuguese. Apps can help organize your routine, but they don't replace mental health assessment or treatment.

What these apps do is concrete: they play a guided meditation in Portuguese, time your breathing, record how you felt each day, and create a graph with that information. None of them are therapy or diagnose anything; the closest thing to clinical monitoring, MindDoc, generates a report for you to take to your doctor.

The key factors influencing your choice are language, what unlocks without a subscription, and whether the app has the tools you'll be using. This guide differentiates meditation from mood journaling because they are different products.

The four tools that these apps offer

Among the resources found in this category are:

  • Guided meditationA voice guides the practice for 3 to 25 minutes, with tracks organized by theme (sleep, focus, gratitude). A flagship product of Calm, Headspace, Lojong, and Insight Timer.
  • Timed breathingAn animation grows and shrinks on the screen, marking inhalation, pause, and exhalation.
  • Humor diaryYou tap on a smiley face, mark what you did that day, and the app creates a weekly calendar and chart. A specialty of Daylio and MindDoc.
  • Sounds to help you sleepRain, white noise, and narrated stories, with a timer to turn off.

Guided meditation in Portuguese: Insight Timer and Lojong

The two apps with the most open content in Portuguese are Insight Timer, a global library with Brazilian teachers among its contributors, and Lojong, which is Brazilian by origin.

Insight Timer: open library, timer, and statistics

The Insight Timer app on the Play Store lists its free features: hundreds of guided meditations in Portuguese, thousands of music tracks and ambient sounds, discussion groups, the meditation timer, and statistics with progress milestones. You can filter by language and duration, and the meditation plays without requiring a card. The timer is the most valuable tool: duration, opening bell, interval bells, and closing bell, with minutes added to the history and, on iPhones, integrated into the Health app. It has a 4.9 rating on the Play Store, with over 261,000 reviews, and a 4.9 on the App Store. The multi-day courses and offline download are the only options available for the Member Plus subscription.

Lojong: the Brazilian app with a gratitude journal.

Lojong originated in Brazil and its description is a 100% guided meditation app in Portuguese. Without a subscription, it unlocks a gratitude journal, meditations for calm, focus and well-being, loving-kindness practices, and introductory mindfulness programs – the perfect gateway for those who have never meditated before. The Premium subscription unlocks all practices, ambient sounds, sleep stories, yoga, downloads, and offline mode. It has a 4.9 rating on the Play Store, with almost 120,000 reviews, and a 4.9 on the App Store. It's my recommendation for beginners: Brazilian voices, conversational rhythm, without the stiff translation found in some foreign apps.

Calm and Headspace: short programs and bedtime stories

Calm and Headspace are the best-known names and work the same way: open trial, the rest by annual subscription with a trial period. They are worthwhile when you want a 7, 10, or 30-day program and narrated bedtime stories.

Calm: a new meditation every day and over 100 stories.

The Calm app description includes meditations ranging from 3 to 25 minutes per topic (deep sleep, focus, gratitude, self-esteem, body scan), a 10-minute Daily Calm that changes every day, over 100 bedtime stories narrated by actors and athletes, including Cauã Reymond, music, stretching video lessons, and Masterclasses. Without Calm Premium, you can use the breathing exercise, a sample of meditations, and some sounds; the Daily Calm and most of the stories are in the paid plan. It has a 4.5 rating on the Play Store, with over 614,000 reviews, and a 4.7 rating on the App Store, where it appears as Calm – Meditation and Sleep.

Android

Headspace: 3-minute sessions and sleepcasts

Headspace lists over 500 meditations, from 3-minute exercises to longer sessions, sleepcasts (ambient narrations to help you fall asleep), breathing exercises, and themed programs. It's a subscription with a free trial; after the trial period, only the introduction remains. It has a 4.5 rating on the Play Store, with almost 340,000 reviews, and a 4.9 on the App Store as Headspace: Sleep & Meditation. It's not included in the cards because the free trial runs out quickly; for those who have already decided to pay for a structured program, it delivers excellent service.

Humor diary with weekly chart: Daylio and MindDoc

The journal compiles perceptions and activities for reference. A graph can show associations in the record, but it does not, on its own, demonstrate the cause of a mood change.

Daylio: two-tap registration, no typing required.

Daylio presents itself as a private diary where you don't type a single line. You choose your mood from five emojis, mark your daily activities (work, exercise, family, bad sleep, whatever you want to create), and that's it. The app combines everything into a calendar, statistics, and graphs, and cross-references activity with mood: you can see that days with walking have a higher average. It accepts notes and photos for those who want a traditional diary. The basic version is free; the premium version is offered within the app. It has a 4.8 rating on the Play Store, with over 461,000 reviews, and a 4.9 on the App Store.

Daily Diary: Humor Diary

Android

MindDoc (formerly Moodpath): questions throughout the day and report to the doctor.

MindDoc is the former Moodpath; the package on the Play Store still uses the old name. Developed by clinical psychologists, it works as a monitoring tool: it asks short questions about how you are feeling throughout the day, records your thoughts, and after a cycle of responses, creates an assessment of your emotional state that you download and share with your doctor or psychologist. It offers courses based on cognitive-behavioral therapy. The basic monitoring is open; complete courses and expanded analyses are available in MindDoc Plus, in 3, 6, and 12-month plans. It has a 4.5 rating on the Play Store, with 40,000 reviews, and a 4.8 on the App Store.

Guided breathing: use a comfortable rhythm.

A visual guide can help you pause and pay attention to your breathing. It's not necessary to hold your breath for a fixed amount of time. Sit with support and breathe comfortably, without forcing deep breaths. If you experience dizziness, shortness of breath, or discomfort, stop the exercise; significant symptoms require attention, not insistence on the timer.

A 10-minute daily routine

  1. Morning (3 minutes)A brief pause for comfortable breathing before opening messages. A reminder for the time you're already up, not the time your alarm clock shows.
  2. Midday (2 minutes)Record your mood in Daylio or MindDoc. Two taps, no text if you don't want to.
  3. Night (5 minutes)A short meditation from Lojong or Insight Timer, or a Calm story with the timer set to shut off.

What Android and iPhone already do without installing anything.

Much of what apps sell as a nighttime routine is already in the settings:

  • Android, Digital WellbeingBedtime mode, which turns the screen black and white and silences notifications at a set time; Focus mode, which pauses selected apps; and app usage timers.
  • iPhone, Focus and Usage TimeSleep, Work, and Do Not Disturb profiles with schedules, plus a daily limit per app.
  • iPhone, Health appSince iOS 17, it has been recording your current or daily emotional state, with a scale and factors, and displaying the history in a graph. It's a native mood diary.
  • Apple WatchThe Mindfulness app includes the Wrist Breathing exercise and records the minutes in the Health app.

How do these apps make money?

Business models vary: some apps offer open practices, others charge for courses, reports, or subscriptions. An automatically renewing subscription may continue to be charged even if you don't open the app. To cancel, use the channel where you subscribed: Google Play, Apple Subscriptions, or the service itself, as indicated on your receipt. Uninstalling the app does not cancel the plan.

Common mistakes that turn the app into dead weight.

  • Choose by nameCalm and Headspace are the most famous, but those who want Portuguese without a subscription end up better with Lojong or Insight Timer.
  • Start with 25 minutes.Long meditations are the ones you abandon. Start with 3 to 5 minute sessions.
  • Letting the test turn into a chargeNote the end of the trial on your calendar and cancel one day before if you are not using it.
  • Record your mood only on bad days. The graph only makes sense with regular days included. Two taps, every day.
  • Use the app instead of going to the customer service center. When what you're feeling is preventing you from sleeping, working, or leaving the house for weeks on end, the next step is to see people, and the section below tells you where.
  • Giving too many permissionsThis humor diary doesn't need location or contacts. Deny access and the app will continue working.

Where to seek help in Brazil

In the Brazilian public health system (SUS), a primary health care unit (UBS) can guide mental health care, and the CAPS (Psychosocial Care Centers) operate on an open-door policy for initial assessment, without requiring appointments or formal referrals. Consult the [link/source]. Ministry of Health guidelines on CAPS and the municipal network. CVV offers emotional support by calling 188; in medical emergencies, SAMU can be reached by calling 192. An SOS button on an app does not replace these services.

To schedule reminders for a routine of your choice, consult the apps for organizing tasks.

Common questions

Can a mental health app replace a psychologist?

No. The app records mood, guides meditation, and organizes routines; the psychologist evaluates, conducts treatment, and contacts the psychiatrist when necessary. MindDoc generates a report to take to the consultation, and Cingulo describes itself as a complement to psychotherapy. If you are already in therapy, a mood diary is the best use of an app: it brings data to the session.

Which app works without a subscription?

Insight Timer and Lojong have the largest free layer, with meditations in Portuguese, sounds, and a timer. Daylio is essentially free. Calm, Headspace, MindDoc, and Cingulo install for free, but the main content requires a subscription.

Do the apps have content in Portuguese?

Lojong is entirely in Portuguese. Insight Timer has hundreds of meditations in Portuguese, with Brazilian teachers. Calm has narration in Portuguese in part of its catalog (the stories with Cauã Reymond, for example), and Headspace has a Portuguese version. Daylio and MindDoc have translated interfaces.

Do ten minutes a day make any difference?

Short sessions can make it easier to establish a routine, but no duration guarantees improvement for everyone. A journal helps to record how you are doing, without proving that the practice caused the change. If symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere with daily life, seek professional evaluation instead of waiting for a graph to improve.

The first step is simple: install Insight Timer or Lojong, filter by Portuguese and 5 minutes, and do your first session tonight. Tomorrow morning, record your mood in Daylio. The graph from the second week will determine the rest.
