Viki in Brazil: How to watch Asian dramas and movies for free.
Viki offers free content with ads and paid options for additional titles and features. Availability should be checked by series, episode, and region. Standard and Plus plans have different benefits; offline functionality requires eligibility and is not included in any subscription.
Viki is part of the Rakuten group and brings together Asian productions from different countries. Subtitles are provided by the community, but the availability of Portuguese subtitles varies by title and the progress of the translation. In this guide, see how to check access, organize your list, and compare conditions before subscribing.
What Viki offers for free.
Some videos can be watched without a subscription, with ads. Others require a Viki Pass or a specific offer. Check the access message and the list of episodes for the program: the presence of the first free episode does not mean that the entire season is available.
What remains locked away is something else: some titles enter the catalog as exclusives for Viki Pass. In series that are still airing in Asia, the first two to four episodes usually become available to everyone, and the rest remain exclusive to subscribers for a period. After that, the program releases them to everyone in the licensed regions; the timeframe varies, and some titles remain exclusive until the license expires.
The catalog covers series and films from Korea, mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Thailand, as well as Korean variety shows and K-pop. On the Play Store, the app is called "Viki: dramas in Portuguese," has a 16+ rating, and the listing states "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases": advertising supports the free tier, and Viki Pass is an in-app purchase.

AndroidOn the iPhone, use the connector for Viki on the App Store. Check the Compatibility section on your device, as requirements change with updates. The app version and the operating system version are different things; both can influence the available features.
Why does it say "not available in your region"?“
Viki buys the license for each series by country and by period; if the distributor hasn't sold the rights to broadcast it in Brazil, the title appears in the search results, but the player refuses playback. Viki Pass doesn't unlock this content: the help center states that regional restrictions remain in place for all plans.
Check the availability message on the program page and in the player. The absence of a standalone button is not enough to diagnose a regional restriction. Licenses can also expire and change access even during a season; see [link/reference]. Why is the Asian film catalog changing?.
Step-by-step guide to creating an account and watching.
An account allows you to organize preferences, lists, and history, according to the available features. Check the age requirements and terms displayed in the registration; the store's age rating is different information. Button names vary by version, but the general flow is this:
- Install the app from Google Play or the App Store and check if the developer is Viki, Inc.
- On Android, tap on I (bottom right corner) and then in Log in Now. On iPhone, tap on To enter on the home screen and then in Register.
- Choose your method: email, Google, Facebook, or Rakuten ID. On iPhones, there's also "Continue with Apple," which allows you to hide your email address.
- Please confirm the verification email that Viki sends.
- On first playback, tap the subtitle icon in the upper right corner of the video and choose Portuguese. The selection will be saved to your account and will apply across the app, website, and TV.
How to find what to watch: country, genre, and popularity
The home screen and search function organize the catalog by country of origin, genre (romance, historical, suspense, comedy, variety), popularity, and new releases. Each series has a channel page with a synopsis, community rating, episodes, and the percentage of subtitles available in your language. The celebrity pages gather everything an actor has done that is available in your region, a shortcut to binge-watching the filmography of someone you discovered in a K-drama.

My list and Continue watching
My List saves series and movies to watch later, and Continue Watching resumes the episode from where you left off on any device with the same account. Both work on the free tier.
Follow a program to find out about the new episode.
On the channel page, tap the bell icon. The app will notify you when a new episode is uploaded and when subtitles in your preferred language are ready. There's a limit of 100 programs per account, and the list is located in Me > Subscribed Programs, where the Edit button removes any you've finished watching.
Portuguese subtitles: language, size, and when they will be ready.
The community participates in many translations, and availability depends on the title and the team involved. Check the languages and progress information for the episode. There is no guaranteed timeframe for completing the Portuguese version: a popular series may receive updates quickly, while another remains incomplete.
Choose the language
- In the player: tap the subtitle icon in the upper right corner, scroll through the list and select Portuguese. The Off option removes subtitles.
- In your account: Me > Settings, under Subtitle Language. What you set here becomes the default on all devices.
- Without a saved preference, the app uses the phone's language and the website uses English.
Adjust size and background
Look for the subtitle options in the player and check if there are any style adjustments. Depending on the device and version, Viki uses system accessibility settings. On iPhone, these are located in the Subtitles and Closed Caption area; on Android, look for Subtitle Preferences. Test a scene to confirm size, contrast, and background.
Why the caption is incomplete and how to be notified.
The thumbnail for each episode shows the percentage of subtitles completed in the chosen language. Below 95%, the player displays "Subtitles incomplete" with a "Notify when ready" button; tap it and the app will send a notification as soon as the translation crosses 95%. Portuguese is among the ten languages that receive this notification. In the Subtitle Team tab for each channel, there is a heart to thank the volunteers.
When a title offers more than one audio track, the player will show the available options. Audio and subtitles are separate choices: finding Portuguese in the subtitles does not guarantee dubbing. Check the episode you intend to watch, as the options may vary within the catalog.
Video quality and internet usage
The free plan uses standard quality; Standard and Plus plans advertise HD at different levels, when available. The actual resolution also depends on the video, device, and connection. Look for the quality selector and, if available, the option to limit HD to Wi-Fi to control mobile data usage.
On mobile phones, 480p uses significantly less data than HD and still keeps the subtitles clear; on TV the difference becomes apparent, and that's where the paid plan starts to make sense.
Comment, rate, and join the community.
The timely comments appear on the video the exact second someone writes them, like a chat with someone who watched it earlier; they can be turned off in the player. The rating goes up to 10, and any user can post reviews on the channel's page. Those who know another language can join a program's subtitling team; the most active volunteers become Qualified Contributors and receive platform benefits.
Viki Pass: What changes in the Standard and Plus plans?
Standard and Plus have monthly and annual options. Check the price on your account signup screen, including currency, renewal, and any applicable taxes. The in-store shopping range includes different products and does not correspond to the monthly price of a specific subscription.
| Resource | Free | Viki Pass Standard | Viki Pass Plus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adverts | Yes | No | No |
| Maximum resolution | Standard quality, as available. | 720p | 1080p |
| Exclusive Pass titles | Only after the exclusivity window (some never) | Yes | Yes |

Offline access is available to eligible Plus subscribers and certain compatible rentals. Title, region, and version influence availability. Check the icon before subscribing for this reason and see the expiration date and authorized device. If the subtitles are updated later, you may need to download the episode again to receive the new translation.
Chromecast is reserved for subscribers, from the Standard plan upwards, and the official list of compatible devices excludes screen mirroring and HDMI cables; to watch on TV without paying, install the Viki app on Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV, or Roku. If offline viewing is your priority, compare the options in the guide. Which Asian movie apps offer downloads and on which plans? before choosing where to subscribe.
How Viki makes money
Three sources foot the bill: the ads you watch on the free tier, the Viki Pass subscription, and, only in the United States and Canada, the individual rental of newly released films. With this money, Viki buys licenses from Asian broadcasters and production companies for specific periods and territories, which explains the three annoying behaviors: the commercial breaks, the temporary exclusivity of releases, and the title disappearing when the license expires.
Free and paid access cater to different needs. In addition to playback features, the Pass can unlock exclusive titles; it's not just about removing ads. No subscription eliminates regional restrictions. Check the desired program and included episodes before deciding if the plan makes sense.
Mistakes that make people give up on the app.
- Install a "modified" APK to remove ads. There are no updates outside of the store, and the help center warns that rooted or jailbroken devices are not compatible.
- Sign up for any plan and wait for the download. Check offline eligibility on Plus or compatible rentals, as well as the title, region, and device.
- Abandoning a series because the subtitles stopped at 70%. Tap Notify when you're ready and follow the program; the community will complete the translation.
- Try mirroring the screen on the TV. Viki doesn't support screen mirroring; use your TV's native app or a Chromecast subscription.
- Watching in HD on 4G without even realizing it. If you have a subscription, enable "Play in HD only on Wi-Fi"; if you don't have a subscription, 480p will save you data.
When the problem is the catalog, and not the app, the solution is to combine services. In the guide about Which free Asian movie apps to install and how to use each one? I'll show you what Chinese and Japanese films Viki leaves out of in Brazil.
Common questions
Is Viki really free or is it just a trial?
Some content can be watched without a subscription, with ads and in SD. Other titles or episodes require payment. Check access on the program's page; the fact that part of the catalog is free does not guarantee that the entire series is available.
Is it possible to download K-dramas from Viki to watch offline?
This feature is available to eligible Plus subscribers and certain compatible rentals, across supported titles, regions, and apps. Check the download icon and the indicated validity period. The Standard plan does not include the offline benefit of a Plus subscription.
Why did my drama disappear from the catalog?
The end of a license is a possibility, but there could also be regional changes, temporary problems, or changes in the offering. Check the title page and service announcements. There is no guarantee that the program will return or that a subscription will resolve the unavailability.
Does Viki Pass unlock series that are "not available in my region"?
No. Regional restrictions remain in place across all plans, including Plus. Subscribing changes ads, resolution, TV, and download speeds, not the country of the license.
Are the Portuguese subtitles the same for paying customers?
Yes. The subtitles are created by the community and delivered the same way to subscribers and non-subscribers; the plan changes ads and resolution, never the available language.
Is it possible to rent movies on Viki in Brazil?
Rental offers depend on the region and eligible users. Check if the option appears for your account and what the rental periods are. Rentals are charged separately from the Viki Pass; do not assume that purchasing a subscription includes any film presented as a rental.
Install the app, create an account, set the subtitles to Portuguese in the settings, and watch three series that are currently airing. In a week, you'll know if the commercial breaks are annoying enough to warrant paying for a subscription or if the free tier is sufficient.
