Play with friends online: free games with private rooms and crossplay.
To play with friends, check if the game offers a room, invite system, or player list compatible with your group's devices. The word "multiplayer" alone doesn't guarantee you'll all be in the same game.
Playing with friends requires more than just the game's name: multiplayer mode, invitation, platform, and version need to match. This selection brings together titles with different approaches, from competitive matches to shared worlds. Several are free to install; Minecraft is a paid option, with the price listed in your device's app store. The observations below are based on official specifications and the conditions of each platform.
What does a game need to have for a group to play together?
Playing online isn't the same as playing with your friends. Many mobile games put you against strangers and call it multiplayer. To get everyone in the same game, I look for five things in the menu:
- Private room or invitation code: a button that creates a closed match and generates a code or link.
- List of friends by accountSupercell ID, Epic account, Microsoft account, HoYoverse account, or the game's own account.
- CrossplayThose with PCs or consoles enter the same room as those with mobile phones. Some games are only available for Android and iPhone.
- Voice chat: within the game or outside of it, in group communication.
- Weight and priceEven a small installer depends on a compatible system, memory, and space for additional data; a 3 GB installer with extra packages requires space and Wi-Fi.
How to create a private room and invite friends.
The gameplay doesn't change much from one game to another. I use Among Us as a model because it's the one that generates the most questions the first time you play:
- Everyone updates the game in the store. Different versions don't see each other in the same room.
- On the Online screen, the host chooses the server region (North America, Europe, or Asia). Guests select the same region, or the code is not found.
- Tap Create Game, set the number of imposters and the map.
- In the waiting room, tap the code at the bottom of the screen to reveal and copy it.
- Send the code to the group. Whoever receives it opens the Private tab, types in the six letters, and enters.
- Only the host sees the start button. If they leave, the room closes and the code expires.
In Stumble Guys and UNO!, the logic is the same, with the name Group or Room. In Free Fire, a closed room requires an item called a Room Card, and in Roblox, a private server is created within each game, either for free or for a fee in Robux charged by the creator.
Light games for the whole group.
Among Us: Match by Code
Among Us allows you to organize matches with a code and choose the corresponding server. Check the player limit and mode options in the current version. Mobile installation and purchase on other platforms may have different conditions; all require compatible versions to play together.
Private room with a six-letter code for up to 15 players, featuring imposters, tasks, and voting.
Stumble Guys: races and groups
Stumble Guys combines obstacle courses and modes that can change depending on the event. Use the available group or custom match options and check the participant limit for your chosen mode. Match the version and invitation method before starting.
Obstacle course with up to 32 players per round and private group via invitation code.
Ludo King: board game with friends
Ludo King brings the game board to your mobile phone and offers modes for playing with others. Check how many participants your chosen mode accepts and how to share the invitation. The online room and local play on the same device have different procedures.
UNO!: Room with house rules
UNO! offers matches and options to play with friends. Special rules and available modes may vary. Before creating a room, check which rules will be used and if any feature requires currency or a specific condition in the app.
The official card game in a private room with house rules, for up to four friends or pairs.
Team-based games: Brawl Stars, Free Fire, and Call of Duty: Mobile
Brawl Stars: Team Modes
Brawl Stars organizes matches in modes with different team sizes. Add friends through the official features and check the requirements of your chosen event. An invite to a team does not eliminate mode, version, or account restrictions.
3-a-side matches lasting only a few minutes, with direct invitations to the team and permanent club.
Free Fire: Squads and Rooms
Free Fire allows you to form squads and use communication features. Custom rooms may require specific conditions or items depending on the current offer. Check the creation screen before arranging a private match with the whole group.
Call of Duty: Mobile: invites and modes
Call of Duty: Mobile combines multiplayer and Battle Royale modes. Friends lists and invites help form a group; team size and requirements vary by mode. Don't assume the mobile version shares matches with console games that use the same franchise name.
The heavy hitters: Genshin Impact and Fortnite
Genshin Impact: Cooperation with Requirements
Genshin Impact offers cooperative gameplay after certain progression requirements. Check the required level and restrictions for activities you plan to do together. Not all quests can be completed in a group, and players need to be using compatible servers.
Fortnite: back in stores, with an Epic account.
Fortnite was removed from the Play Store and the App Store in 2020 and spent years being installed independently. Today, it's still available on both platforms: a 4.6 rating on the Play Store with 10 million+ downloads, and a 4.6 rating on the App Store, where the app is 2.3 GB before seasonal updates. On Android, it's also distributed through the Epic Games Store app. The squad is limited to four players, voice chat is native, and an Epic account combines mobile, PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch players in the same match.
Minecraft: the only paid game on the list
On the Play Store, Minecraft appears as "Minecraft: Play with friends" and costs R$ 10.90; The App Store costs R$ 9.90. It's the Bedrock Edition, the same one for Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, and that's what makes the price worthwhile: the world you create on your phone can host players from compatible platforms, respecting the multiplayer and subscription conditions of the console. To play online, each player needs a free Microsoft account.
There are three ways to play together. On the same Wi-Fi network, the open world with multiplayer enabled appears in the Friends tab on other devices, for up to 8 people. Away from home, the Friends tab shows the open worlds of those on your Microsoft account list. And there are servers: public ones, listed within the game, and private ones, whether it's a Realms server (Mojang's monthly subscription, up to 10 players at the same time) or a server maintained by someone in your group. Rated 4.4 on Play with 50 million+ downloads; 1.6 GB on the App Store.
Paid version (R$ 10.90) of Bedrock Edition: the same world for mobile, PC and console, with a free Microsoft account.
Roblox: one app, thousands of games
Roblox brings together experiences created by different developers. Add a friend and check if the experience allows you to join the same server. Private servers, number of participants, and compatibility vary; some features may require payment in Robux.
Compare the requirements to play together.
| Game type | Check before sending the invitation. |
|---|---|
| Among Us and board game games | Code, region and version |
| Team games | Group size and mode requirements |
| Minecraft | Bedrock Edition, account and access to the world |
| Genshin Impact | Server, progress and cooperative activities |
| Roblox | Rules of experience and server |
Crossplay: the account is what connects mobile, PC, and console.
When crossplay exists, it goes through a studio account, not the store: Epic in Fortnite, HoYoverse in Genshin, Microsoft in Minecraft, Innersloth in Among Us, Scopely in Stumble Guys. Create the account on your phone, log in with it on your PC or console, and your friends list, skins, and progress will appear there. Those playing on Xbox or PlayStation also need an online subscription for their console; this is a console rule, not a game rule.
If the plan is the opposite, to play a demanding PC title on your mobile phone without installing anything, the guide to game streaming apps It shows the services that run the game in the cloud and only send the video to the screen.
Voice chat: in-game or via group call
Free Fire, Call of Duty: Mobile, Fortnite, and Ludo King have native voice chat, enabled in the game menu. Among Us, Stumble Guys, UNO!, and Brawl Stars do not, and that's where group calls come in: WhatsApp allows voice calls with up to 32 participants, and Discord, free in both app stores, keeps a voice channel open at all times, better for groups that play every week. The game continues running with the call in the background. Headphones with a microphone prevent speaker echo during everyone's call.
Data, battery, and storage: what to sort out before departure.
Turn-based games, like Ludo King and UNO!, run well on 4G. Real-time shooters, however, feel every fluctuation: in Free Fire and Call of Duty: Mobile, an unstable connection results in characters teleporting and shots not registering. At home, 5 GHz Wi-Fi is used near the router; on the street, the guide to public Wi-Fi networks It explains how to find an official location and why the login portal sometimes doesn't open.
Battery life is the second biggest bottleneck. Genshin, CoD, and Fortnite run the screen at a high refresh rate and heat up the device; an hour of gameplay consumes more battery than a day of texting. Reducing the frame rate in the game helps, and the battery saving guide It shows what weighs most heavily on Android and iPhone settings.
Space is the third most important factor. Adding Genshin, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Fortnite together with the download packages each game receives after installation, you'll exceed 20 GB of game space. Before installing the second hefty game..., the cleaning guide to free up space It shows where gigabytes are usually stored, starting with WhatsApp media.
How do these games make money?
Business models combine in-game purchases, items, passes, currency, and optional services. Check the price of each feature before confirming. For accounts belonging to minors, parents/guardians should review purchases and communication, and should not share passwords or payment information with other players.
Errors that freeze the game
- Different region in Among UsThe code is not found. Everyone chooses the same region before typing.
- Outdated versionInvisible room or connection error. Please refresh before scheduling.
- Old codeIn Among Us and Stumble Guys, the code expires when the host closes the room. Request a new one.
- Account not linkedIn Minecraft, without a Microsoft account, the Friends tab is empty; in Fortnite, without an Epic account, the console friend does not appear.
- Microphone without permissionThe call connects but no one can hear it. Check your system settings.
Common questions
Can you play Among Us on a mobile phone with someone who's on a PC?
Yes. The room code works on mobile, PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, as long as they are all in the same server region and running the same game version.
Does the mobile version of Minecraft play with Xbox and PlayStation?
Yes. The version available on the Play Store and App Store is the Bedrock Edition, the same as the console and Windows versions. Each player needs a Microsoft account; those on console also need an online subscription to the platform.
Is Fortnite on Google Play?
Yes. The game is available on the Play Store and the App Store, with a 4.6 rating on both. On Android, the game can also be installed through the Epic Games Store app.
Do I need to pay to create a private room?
In most cases, no: Among Us, Stumble Guys, UNO!, Ludo King, and Brawl Stars offer free rooms. Free Fire requires a Room Card, Roblox lets the creator of each game decide whether to charge Robux for a private server, and Minecraft Realms is a subscription service.
Choose a lightweight game for the first meeting, update the version on all devices, create the room, and send the code to the group. After the group has joined the same game once, the more demanding players can join on their own.
