Apps for watching free movies: the 5 that work in Brazil
There are apps in Brazil that offer movies and shows for free, often with ads. Other cultural projects also offer programming without a subscription. In this guide, discover five popular options and see what each offers, where an account is required, and what limits depend on the catalog and device.
Pluto TV, +SBT, the free Globoplay offering, YouTube, and Plex cater to different uses. This selection is not exhaustive of the available options. Before installing, check the official distribution for Brazil; lists from other countries may indicate services or titles that are not accessible in your region.
Below, we explain what each option includes, who pays the bill, why films enter and leave the catalog, and what the free tier doesn't offer.
How a free movie app pays the bills.
Rights holders may authorize free access to films in exchange for advertising, promotion, cultural funding, or other conditions. On commercial platforms, exhibition rights often vary by territory and period. Therefore, a title may be removed from the offer or appear with different access in another region.
FAST refers to free television channels supported by advertising. Free video on demand with ads is another modality, often called AVOD. An app can combine the two: continuous programming to watch live and titles that you choose to start whenever you want.
Pluto TV: 24-hour channels and on-demand catalog
Pluto TV, from Paramount, is the app that defines the category in Brazil. Its Google Play listing promises hundreds of live channels and an on-demand library with content from Paramount, MGM, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Discovery, among others. You open the app and a movie channel is already playing; or you go to the on-demand tab and choose a movie.
The channels are themed: action, comedy, anime, true crime, romance, sports, and channels dedicated to a single series. That's the part that's captivating, because it doesn't require a decision; the on-demand library is what solves Friday night's entertainment. The commercial breaks appear in short blocks, like on broadcast TV.
You don't need an account to watch; creating one is useful for saving favorites and continuing where you left off on another screen. On Google Play, the app has a 4.0 rating based on over 800,000 reviews; on the App Store, the iPhone version is called "Pluto TV – Live TV and Movies" and has a rating of over 4.8 based on 235,000 reviews.
Live channels 24 hours a day and on-demand movies and series, supported by advertisements.
SBT: soap operas, cartoons and SBT live
+SBT is the broadcaster's free streaming service: on-demand content, live channels, and the SBT signal in real time, all supported by advertising, just like broadcast television. It's the app for those who want soap operas, especially the dubbed Mexican ones that the channel has been showing for decades, as well as cartoons, old variety shows, which the app calls "original content," and original productions.
Movies are secondary here: the catalog revolves around the broadcaster's programming. But SBT live streaming on mobile solves the problem of watching movies without an antenna, and the app's live channels have continuous programming, like Pluto TV. To unlock the catalog, the app requires free registration. On Google Play, +SBT has a rating of 4.1 from almost 69,000 reviews; on the App Store, 4.6 from 15,000.
Free streaming of SBT with soap operas, cartoons, live channels and the station's signal in real time.
Globoplay for free: what opens without subscribing
Globoplay combines free accounts and paid plans. The free offering includes programs and channels, including TV Globo where the signal is available, as well as other options announced by the service. Movies and exclusive content may require a specific plan. Check the title and local coverage, instead of assuming that all live broadcasts are paid.
It's on the list because you probably already have it installed, and the free tier requires a login. For those who only want free movies, Globoplay is the narrowest of the five options; for Brazilian TV programs without paying, it's the widest. On Google Play, it has a rating of 4.7 based on 1.6 million reviews; on the App Store, 4.6 based on 478,000 reviews.
Globo's streaming service with a free tier of programs and ge tv; additional content depending on the plan.
YouTube: full movies on the distributors' official channels.
YouTube is the video app that everyone has and also one of the largest collections of free full-length movies in the country, as long as you look in the right place. Distributors and producers maintain official channels with entire feature films, dubbed or subtitled, monetized with ads: the commercial break appears in the middle of the movie and the distributor receives a portion of what the advertiser paid. It's the Pluto TV model, but the curation is yours.
The app's movie section lists titles to rent or buy; free movies are found through search and channels. YouTube Premium, which is paid, removes ads and allows downloads within the app for offline viewing, something none of the other four apps do in the free tier.
How to separate the official channel from the pirated upload.
- Check the channel's identity and its relationship with the distributor or rights holder. A verification badge helps identify the channel, but it doesn't, by itself, prove the rights to each video.
- Read the description and look for information about authorized distribution. Title, cover, and use of capital letters are not proof of legality or irregularity.
- Check the channels linked by the producer or distributor themselves. The number of videos and the age of the channel are indicators of context, not guarantees of authorization.
- An unavailable video may have been removed for various reasons, including the owner's decision, regional restrictions, or changes in privacy. The isolated message does not prove infringement.
On Google Play, YouTube has a rating of 4.1 based on over 171 million reviews; on the App Store, it has a rating of 4.7 based on 7.2 million reviews.
Videos, live streams, and full-length films published by official distributor channels, with advertisements.
Plex: the free catalog with ads and the personal library.
Plex is two products in one app. The first is a FAST service like Pluto TV: its Google Play listing mentions over 80 live channels and thousands of on-demand movies and series from studios worldwide, without subscription fees and supported by advertising. The second is a personal media server: the movies and music you have on your computer are organized with cover art and synopsis and play on your phone and TV.
Plex separates its catalog with ads and personal library. In the new mobile versions, local library playback no longer requires the old one-minute unlock fee; remote access and additional features have their own terms and conditions. See the [link/reference]. Plex and personal library guide To understand the difference before hiring.
Rating on Google Play: 3.4 out of 484,000 reviews, the lowest of the five; on the App Store, 4.5.
Over 80 live channels and thousands of ad-supported movies and series on demand, plus a server for your own media.
Quick comparison: what each app has
| App | Live channels | on demand | You need an account. | Smart TV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlutoTV | Yes, hundreds. | Yes, movies and series. | No; optional for favorites | Yes |
| SBT | Yes, including SBT in real time. | Yes, soap operas and programs. | Yes, registration is free. | Yes |
| Globoplay for free | There are free channels available, depending on coverage and availability. | Part of the catalog, with an advertisement. | Yes, Globo Account | Yes |
| YouTube | It's not TV; it has live broadcasts. | Yes, on official channels. | No; optional | Yes |
| Plex | Yes, more than 80 | Yes, international catalog | Yes, Plex account. | Yes |
Offline functionality should be checked by service and title. Pluto TV and +SBT are geared towards connected playback; the free Plex catalog also does not offer downloads. On YouTube, eligibility depends on the offer and region. Free content does not have a universal download rule.
How to choose what you want to watch
- Studio movie for the night: Pluto TV first, Plex next.
- Soap operas, variety shows, and cartoons: +SBT; Globo and ge tv programs: Globoplay for free.
- A specific movie, whose name you already know: search on YouTube, filtering by verified channel.
- Turn it on and let it play, without choosing: live channels from Pluto TV or Plex.
For K-dramas and Asian films, none of the five are specialists. Viki, iQIYI, and WeTV have a free tier with ads and a dedicated catalog, and I've compiled everything in...the guide to free Asian movie apps.
Three questions before installing
Do you want to choose the movie or do you want someone else to choose for you? Those who like to decide will go to the on-demand catalog; those who just want to tune in prefer linear channels. Will you watch on your phone or TV? Favorites and "continue watching" only sync with an account. Dubbed or subtitled? Check the audio icon on the movie's page before pressing play: on Pluto TV and +SBT dubbing is the norm, on Plex subtitles are more common.
What the free tier doesn't deliver
A specific release may not be available for free. Distribution paths vary: cinemas, rentals, subscriptions, official channels, and screenings do not follow a universal timeframe. Check where the film is authorized in Brazil, without assuming that you have to wait years for any production.
The current hit series. The same goes for the series everyone's talking about: it's the product that sustains the subscription, and the studio doesn't license it for the free tier while it sells a plan. If what you want is the movie and series of the month, the decision is between subscriptions, and I've put together... A comparison between Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+ by catalog and price..
The offline feature depends on the rights and implementation of the service. Don't try to turn a stream into a download using an app that promises to unlock everything. Check the official option and its validity; the free Plex catalog, for example, is not included in Plex Pass personal media downloads.
For a single film, without subscribing to anything, individual rental is the cheapest way to release a movie, and I explained how it works in...Google TV's guide to renting movies.
Step-by-step guide to get started today.
- Install via Google Play or the App Store and check the developer in the listing: Pluto, SBT, Globo, Google, and Plex Inc. all own their own apps.
- Create an account where it's requested (+SBT, Globoplay, and Plex); on Pluto TV and YouTube, you can watch without logging in.
- Start with the live channels; then go to the on-demand tab and create your favorites list.
- On your Smart TV, install the same app from the TV's app store and sign in with the same account.
- If the movie freezes, reduce the quality in the app settings or switch from 4G to Wi-Fi.
Common mistakes people make when looking for free movies.
- Installing apps from unknown sources that promise to have all the movies is a bad idea. Check the developer, distribution, and permissions; a catalog promise doesn't prove the installer's rights or origin.
- Don't rely solely on the name or icon. Check the developer and use the links published by the service. Similar names may identify different products and do not guarantee a connection to the brand you are looking for.
- Using a VPN to access the American catalog of Pluto TV or Plex is not possible. The license is country-specific; the movie may freeze and your account could be blocked due to the terms of service.
- Using lists from another country without checking the region is risky. Catalogs and app availability change; check the official offer for Brazil before relying on a service.
- Waiting for a free release on the app means giving up on the entire category; those who enter expecting a premiere leave frustrated, those who enter expecting a studio film from a few years ago stay.
Common questions
Do I need to create an account to use Pluto TV?
No. The app opens directly to live channels and the on-demand catalog. The account is optional and serves to save favorites and resume the movie on another device.
Can I watch it offline on any of these apps?
Check the service and title. Pluto TV, +SBT, and the free Plex catalog require an internet connection to play. On YouTube, offline access depends on eligibility and availability. A feature advertised for another country or plan does not guarantee access on your device.
Why did the movie I was watching disappear from the app?
The license has expired. The platform rents the title by term and by country; when the contract ends, the film is removed and another one is added. Pluto TV and Plex notify you with a "coming soon" notice on the shelf.
Do free apps work on Smart TVs?
Yes. All five are available in stores for major Smart TVs and devices like Chromecast and Fire TV; using the same mobile account, favorites and "continue watching" options appear in the living room.
Are there any free movie release apps?
There may be free premieres in authorized offers, but there's no guarantee you'll find the release you want. Theatrical, rental, and streaming windows vary by production. Check the official distribution and compare the rental or subscription cost when there isn't a free option.
Does Globoplay have movies for free?
The free offerings vary and include programs and channels. Check if the movie you want is available on your account or requires a subscription. Live TV Globo may be free where there is coverage, and this is different from having access to the service's entire movie catalog.
Install Pluto TV now, leave a movie channel playing while you browse the on-demand tab, and if you miss soap operas or Brazilian programs, add +SBT. The other three will be added as your evening dictates.
