Watch movies online on Plex: the free catalog and personal library.
Plex combines two features: a catalog of movies, TV shows, and channels with ads, and a tool to access your personal library. For the service's catalog, you don't need to configure a computer. For your own videos, you use Plex Media Server on a compatible device.
The difference also explains the charges. The free catalog still includes ads, while personal media resources have their own rules for local, remote, and download access. In the new mobile versions, the old one-minute limit for local playback has been removed; don't confuse instructions from older versions with current functionality.
This guide shows you how to identify a movie's source, check the languages, and decide if you need a subscription. Offerings vary by country, and the interface changes with updates. Use the links to the official stores and check the version available for your device.
The two Plex systems that reside within the same icon.
In the app store, you'll find the catalog of movies and TV shows offered by Plex. This section is ad-supported and depends on regional availability. Open the Plex source within the app to distinguish it from results that lead to another platform or files hosted on a personal server.
The second half appears further down in the same text: stream your own photos, music, movies, and shows to any device. That's the Plex server. It relies on a free program installed on your computer, Plex Media Server, which reads the video folders and delivers the content to the mobile app. At home, on the same Wi-Fi network, the free account is sufficient; leaving home and continuing to watch is what Plex has been charging for since April 2025.
What does the free tier offer in Brazil?
Plex's on-demand catalog is available in almost every country. The support page lists exceptions due to local regulations (Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and a few others), and Brazil is not among them. Live channels are also available here: in a statement about expanding its catalog, Plex mentions Brazil among the markets served, alongside Mexico, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
The catalog is subject to licensing and may change depending on the territory and time period. Check each title's page to find out where it can be played; search results may also indicate other services. To compare subscription platforms, see [link/reference]. A guide to Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+..
Live channels have continuous programming: you can access them at the time the content is airing. Check the available schedule in Brazil and the language options. The list may change, and a channel advertised in another country may not appear in your account.
What the free tier doesn't do
- Don't download movies to watch offline. Plex support is straightforward: the content on the free service is not licensed for download, and Plex Pass doesn't change that.
- It doesn't remove the ads. The studios' revenue comes from them, so subscribing to Plex Pass doesn't remove or reduce the gaps in the free catalog.
- It doesn't guarantee Portuguese subtitles. Plex requests subtitles from distributors, but what usually arrives is in English, and some titles come without any subtitle track at all.
Step by step: create an account and find the free catalog.
- Install via the official app: Google Play on Android, App Store on iPhone. The card below will take you directly there.
- Tap on "create account" and register with your email, Google, or Apple. It doesn't ask for a card; the Plex website itself states this on the registration screen.
- Upon first opening the app, it asks if you want to set up a server. Skip it. The movie section doesn't depend on it.
- On the home screen, find the on-demand movies and series and live TV sections. Everything that appears there marked as Plex content is free with ads.
- Open a title, tap play, and let the first interval pass. The quality automatically improves: the app adjusts the resolution according to the connection, so on 4G the video starts lower and gets better.
- Select what you want in "Watch later" and continue where you left off on another device: the account synchronizes the movie's progress between your phone, TV, and browser.
The app is rated 16+ on Play. For children, create a managed user in Plex Home with a restricted profile; you can turn off the free movie source just for them.

The iPhone and iPad version is published by Plex Inc. Check compatibility and available playback and streaming features on your device. Account, server, and app version influence the experience. The old unlocking rule does not apply to local playback on the new mobile versions.

iOSHow to turn on subtitles
In the free catalog
During playback, tap the screen and look for the subtitles and audio button. Only the tracks that the distributor delivered for that title will appear there. If Portuguese appears, select it; if only English appears or nothing, there's no way to force it, because the app doesn't generate subtitles or translate. My tip: test the menu in the first minute, before settling into your seat, and switch titles without hesitation if the track isn't available.
In your own files
In your personal library, you can associate compatible subtitle files with your videos. An SRT file with a name matching the video helps with identification; server support explains the language and organization standards. After importing, check in the player to see if the track appears and if the synchronization is correct.
Broadcast to TV
Plex was born for the big screen. Three paths, from simplest to best:
- Chromecast: Tap the cast icon in the app (Android or iPhone) and choose the TV or dongle on the same network. Your phone becomes the remote control.
- AirPlay: On iPhone, sends the video to Apple TV or a compatible TV, without needing an extra app.
- Plex app on your TV: available for Android TV and Google TV, Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, and the Samsung and LG TV app stores. You log in with the same account and your browsing history is transferred.
The second Plex: your computer becomes a server.
The server organizes videos that you have permission to use, including personal recordings and other compatible files. It can identify titles and search metadata, but automatic identification isn't always accurate. Keep a copy of your files and check folder permissions before sharing them.
- On your computer, download Plex Media Server (Windows, Mac, or Linux) from the downloads section of the Plex website and sign in with the same account you use on your mobile phone.
- Create a library of type Movies and point it to the videos folder. The server identifies the titles by file name and downloads cover art and synopsis automatically, so name it “Movie Name (year).mkv”.
- Leave your computer on, without hibernating, and open the mobile app on the same Wi-Fi network. Your library will appear next to the free catalog.
- Open a video from your library on the same network as the server. In the newer mobile versions, local playback is free. If an old charge or limitation appears, check the version and whether the connection was recognized as local before subscribing.
Compatibility depends not only on the MP4 or MKV file extension: codecs, audio, subtitles, and device capabilities may require conversion by the server. DRM-protected content and some disc formats are not supported. If the computer is turned off or disconnected, the personal library may become unavailable.
Free, Remote Watch Pass, or Plex Pass: what does each one unlock?
To remotely access videos from a personal library, check the user's subscription and the server owner's subscription. The Remote Watch Pass serves the account that subscribes to it; a Plex Pass from the owner can enable remote access for authorized users on that server. This does not grant access to libraries that have not been shared with you.

How Plex makes money
Plex combines advertising in the catalog offered by the service and subscriptions for personal library resources. There may also be rental offers in compatible marketplaces. Plex Pass does not remove ads from the platform's free movies. The old mobile unlock fee has been eliminated in newer versions, but documentation for older apps may still mention it.
Common mistakes beginners make
- Install an "unlocked Plex Pass" APK from outside the store. The official app is free; the modified copy comes with access to your phone. Only available through the Play Store or the App Store.
- Confusing an old instruction with the current version. The one-minute limitation applies to older mobile versions; check for updates and network identification if there are restrictions in your personal library.
- See ad in the middle of the movie itself. Support explains: you chose the Plex catalog as your source instead of your server. Check the source icon before pressing play.
- Assume that any search results are in the free catalog. Check the source and availability of the title in Brazil before you begin.

Common questions
Is Plex free?
The account is free, and the catalog of movies, series, and live TV is free with ads, no credit card required for registration. You only pay for the use of your personal library outside your home (Remote Watch Pass) and the extras included in the Plex Pass.
Is it possible to download movies from Plex to watch offline?
From the free catalog, no; the studios' license doesn't allow it, and Plex Pass doesn't enable it either. The Plex Pass download is for your own files, the ones on your server.
Do you need a computer to use Plex?
For the free catalog, no problem: all you need is your cell phone, account, and internet. A computer is only necessary if you want your personal library, which requires Plex Media Server running somewhere.
Are there any films dubbed or subtitled in Portuguese?
Some titles include audio or subtitles in Portuguese, and the player menu shows the options for each. The service default is original language with English subtitles, when provided by the distributor. Test the menu within the first minute.
Why does the app ask for payment to watch my own videos?
Check if you are accessing remotely and what the account or server eligibility is. In the new mobile versions, local access does not require the old unlock fee. A subscription request may be linked to remote playback or a Plex Pass feature, and not to the free catalog.
Does it work on smart TVs?
Yes. There's a Plex app for Android TV and Google TV, Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, and Samsung and LG TVs, as well as Chromecast and AirPlay from your phone. The movie continues from where you left off.
First step: install from the store, create an account without a credit card, and go directly to the movies and series section. If you like the free catalog, then turn on your computer and build your library.
