Best dating apps: Tinder, Bumble, Happn, or OkCupid?

This guide is intended for adults. Check the minimum age in the terms of service: the store's age rating does not replace the registration rules.

The five apps in this comparison all have the same free registration and the same heart button. The difference lies in the mechanics behind them: Tinder creates the match with your finger, happn with GPS within a 250-meter radius, OkCupid with a questionnaire that generates percentages, Bumble with a clock showing the timeframe indicated in the app, and Badoo with a conversation that begins before the match.

Let me be blunt: there is no "best" app for everyone. There's the mechanics that work best with your way of meeting people. I read the profiles of all five on Google Play and the help center for each one in September 2026, and a famous rule fell by the wayside: Bumble no longer requires women to write first in most countries.

Tinder: the stack of profiles by distance

Tinder is the most downloaded dating app on the Play Store: it boasts over 500 million downloads and a 4.7 rating based on more than 9 million reviews. The mechanics are the same as everyone else's: you set your age, maximum distance, and who you want to see, and the app delivers a stack of profiles. Swiping right means "like"; swiping left means "pass." When both parties like each other, a match is created and the chat opens.

The free version includes registration, preferences, Facial Verification (the video selfie that gives your profile a badge), personality questions, Astrology Mode, and Double Date, which allows you to bring a friend along on the date. Paid plans, according to the description, offer: unlimited Likes, unlimited Backlinks, Passport Mode (matching in another city), and Incognito Mode in Plus; seeing who liked you, Top Picks, weekly Super Likes, and a monthly Boost in Gold; and prioritizing messages before a match and likes in Platinum.

Bumble: the rule of who writes first has changed.

Bumble became known for its specific rules for initiating conversations. The product has undergone changes, and the flow may vary depending on the region and version. Check in the match itself who can send the opening, if there is an initial question, and what the indicated deadline is; don't treat the old rule as universal.

Free options include: profile with interests and answers, identity verification, video calls within the chat, Spotify connectivity, and Do Not Disturb mode, which hides your profile without deleting connections. Bumble Premium includes: see everyone who liked you, advanced filters by values and habits, reconnect with expired matches, unlimited votes, Travel Mode, and Invisible Mode. The friendship aspect has become a separate app, Bumble For Friends, from the same company that owns Badoo.

happn: who crossed your path

Happn replaces the battery with a record of past encounters. With location services enabled, the app notes every time you and another user have been within a 1 to 250 meter radius and places that profile on your timeline with the approximate location of the meeting: the bakery, the station, the gym. The exact location is never shown to the other user; only the approximate meeting point.

Liking is secret. The person only finds out if they like you back, and then it becomes a Crush, which opens the chat. Without a Crush, there's no message, which prevents unwanted approaches via drawing. Profile verification is done via video: you repeat a head gesture, the app compares it to your photos and releases the verified profile badge.

The app boasts over 100 million downloads and a 4.6 rating. Premium unlocks a list of people who liked you and SuperCrushes, who send a message before a Crush even exists. Those who always travel the same route in big cities benefit the most: the app thrives on repetitive routines.

OkCupid: Questionnaire and compatibility percentage

OkCupid is the only one of the five that prioritizes text over photos. When creating your profile, you answer questions about your routine, values, children, and what you expect from a relationship, and you indicate how much each answer matters. The app cross-references your answers with those of others and displays a compatibility percentage next to each profile. The more questions answered, the more meaningful the percentage becomes.

The message also has its own rule. You need to like someone before writing, but you can send a single introductory message (the "intro") along with the like. It appears on your profile card when the person reaches you; if they like you back, the intro becomes the beginning of the conversation. If not, it never reaches the inbox. Unlimited messages before a match don't exist: it's one intro per person.

The app features over 60 gender identities and orientations during registration, has a 4.0 rating, and has been downloaded over 50 million times. Extras are sold via subscription and individual items, with purchases ranging from R$ 2.55 to R$ 989.99 listed on the Play Store. Badoo: pre-match conversation

Badoo is the app with the most open door. Besides the "likes" mode, it shows a list of nearby people and allows you to start a conversation before any mutual likes, a feature the app description calls "Chat before connecting." You state your intentions in your profile (relationship, friendship, something casual) so that viewers know what you're looking for, and the app suggests topics when the conversation stalls.

Because it has the most informal conversational style, Badoo is the one that most resembles... Chat apps for meeting new people, which I discussed in another guide focusing on friendship and conversation.

Which mechanic suits you best?

Choosing based on the number of downloads is the most common mistake. The right app is the one that generates the kind of initial conversation you can sustain.

You get stuck on the first message.

On OkCupid, profile responses can provide topics of conversation; on happn, shared interests can start a conversation. Comment on something specific, without assuming intimacy simply because you frequent the same area.

Do you want to know who has been in the same place as you?

Happn uses location information to suggest approximate matches. Check your permissions and privacy options. The experience depends on active users and routes; there is no guarantee of finding compatible people.

Would you rather talk to someone before judging them by a photo?

Badoo, for its open conversation before a match, and OkCupid, for its text-heavy profiles. In both, a profile with long answers attracts people who also read.

You want volume and you decide quickly.

Tinder is an option for those who prefer to explore profiles by likes and distance filters. The global number of downloads doesn't guarantee that there are more compatible people in every city. Evaluate who appears within your radius and whether their interaction style matches what you're looking for.

Are you looking for someone of the same faith?

All five are general apps; none were specifically designed for this purpose. For this case, I separated the... Christian dating apps in a separate guide, detailing what each person requests during registration.

If your goal is a serious relationship with a Christian woman, the path from profile to first date is outlined in the guide on... serious relationship with Christian women.

How do these apps make money?

None of the five charge for creating a profile, liking posts, or chatting after a match. Revenue comes from three sources, and knowing this explains each shiny button that appears on the screen:

  1. SignatureTinder Plus, Gold, and Platinum; Bumble Boost and Premium; happn Premium; OkCupid by subscription; Badoo Premium and Premium Plus. The product is almost always the same: seeing who has liked you, unlimited likes, and prominence in the queue.
  2. Individual itemsBoost and Super Like on Tinder, SuperSwipe and Spotlight on Bumble, SuperCrush on happn, and Flirting on Badoo. These are the low-priced options in the range, from R$ 0.90 to R$ 2.55 for the cheapest item on each app.
  3. AdvertsTinder and Badoo advertise "no ads" as an advantage of their paid plan, which says enough about the free version.

How to pause without deleting your account.

No one needs to delete the app to disappear for a week. Each one has a pause button, and its price varies:

  • BumbleDo Not Disturb mode, which is free, hides your profile and keeps all your connections.
  • happnYou choose who can see you and what information to share, free of charge, according to the profile.
  • TinderThe Incognito Mode, which shows your profile only to people you've liked, is part of the Plus plan.
  • BadooThe invisible mode is included in Premium Plus.

Deleting your account resets matches and conversations on all platforms. If you just want to take a break, use the pause function.

Step by step: a profile that works in all five

  1. Review the verification process offered and the app's data policy. Do so through the official channel if you decide to use the feature. The verification badge does not guarantee absolute identity, intent, or outcome in the relationship.
  2. Use four to six photos: the first with your face clearly visible and without sunglasses, at least one full-body shot, and one of you doing something you enjoy.
  3. Write your bio with a concrete hook: a place you frequent, a dish you know how to make, a TV series. That's what gets you talking on OkCupid and happn.
  4. Adjust distance and age before liking. On Tinder and Bumble, the radius determines who appears; on happn, leave location enabled to fill your timeline.
  5. Answer the questions on OkCupid and the personality quizzes on Tinder and Bumble: they influence how you appear to others.
  6. Indicate your intention in your profile (relationship, friendship, something casual) where the app asks. Saves you conversation with someone who wants something else.

Errors that empty the inbox

  • Letting a Bumble match expire: the time indicated in the app passes without a message, and the match disappears from your list; reconnecting is a Premium feature.
  • Thinking that happn shows where the person is now is wrong. It shows the approximate point where you crossed paths, not your current location.
  • Skipping the OkCupid questions: the percentage becomes a guess and the app has less to match.
  • Open with "hi". Bumble even suggests a more personal message when it detects a dry "hi"; otherwise, the result is the same silence.
  • Quickly switching to another messenger without reviewing what will be shared. Requests for money, codes, or documents require caution. A video call can help with conversation, but it alone doesn't resolve doubts about identity or intent.
  • Use all five at the same time without any criteria. Choose two with different mechanics (one stack-based, one context-based) and give each one two weeks.

Common questions

Which of the five is free?

All apps: downloading, creating a profile, liking, and chatting after a match are free on all of them. What you pay for is seeing who liked you, unlimited likes, being featured in the queue, and, on Tinder and Badoo, removing ads.

Does Bumble still require women to send the first message?

The rule isn't universal: there have been changes to the product and regional differences. Check the guidance displayed in your match, including who can initiate and the deadline to respond. Older pages and store descriptions may reflect a previous workflow.

Does happn show my location to others?

No. It shows the approximate point where the two crossed paths, without their current position or route. Location services need to be turned on for the app to record the crossings.

Can I send a message before matching?

On Badoo, yes, it's through a conversation before connecting. On OkCupid, there's an intro per person, which only appears if they like you. On Tinder and Happn, it's only available with paid features (Platinum and SuperCrush). On Bumble, the flow described in the help center begins with the match.

Choose the mechanic that suits you best, install an app today, get verified, and complete your profile with a compelling bio. The first conversation will come from your completed profile, not from the fifth app you install.
