Apps for creating 3D photos: depth and movement in the photo
3D photo effects simulate depth from a regular image. The application estimates the separation between subject and background and animates these regions to create a slight camera shift. The result can be a video or an interactive effect, depending on the tool; it is not a faithful reconstruction of all sides of the scene.
The effect has two names that apps deliberately mix up. One is parallax, the depth effect: the photo flips when the virtual camera moves, the same trick as the 3D zoom that took over Reels and TikTok. The other is cinemagraph, the movement effect: the person stands still, but a cloud passes by, water flows, and hair sways. Motionleap, the category leader with 50 million downloads on Play, does both. VIMAGE, with 10 million, does too.
And here's the first cost-cutting measure: the simplest version of parallax is already on your phone. Google Photos creates a cinematic photo in three taps, and the iPhone 12 and later with iOS 26 transforms the lock screen photo into a space scene that reacts to the tilt of the device. Apps kick in when you want to control the movement.
Depth or movement: the two effects that make up 3D photos.
First, decide which of the two you want, because the right photo varies from one to the other.
Parallax: the photo gains depth.
The app estimates a depth map, an invisible layer showing the distance between each pixel, slices the image into planes, and moves a virtual camera: zooming in, zooming out, rotating slightly. The foreground plane moves more than the background, and this difference is what gives the sensation of volume. It works best with a sharp person and a background at some distance from them: street, park, beach.
Cinemagraph: part of the photo moves.
Here the photo remains flat; a region gains movement in a loop. You draw arrows on the water or sky, mark with pins the areas that should remain still, and the app interpolates the frames. The result looks like a photo that breathes: clouds rushing by, smoke rising, hair blowing in the wind, while the face remains exactly where it was.
Caricature and cartoon are another family of effects and are included in the guide of how to turn photos into drawings. To share the animation across different networks, it's best to export a video: interactive effects from one platform may not continue to work outside of it.
The right photo enhances the depth effect.
To make estimating depth easier, choose a well-lit photo with a clear separation between the subject and the background. Before applying the effect, observe these points:
- A person or a main object, It's not a group of ten in a row; the app needs to decide who is in front.
- Clean edge. Loose hair against a clear sky, glasses, glass, and grates confuse the depth perception and become blurry when the camera moves.
- Layered background: floor, middle, and horizon. A smooth wall a meter from behind has nothing to move.
- Original resolution. The photo that arrived via WhatsApp has already lost detail; retrieve it from your gallery or backup.
- For cinemagraph, an element that moves in real life: water, cloud, smoke, fabric, fire.
If the photo still needs color, contrast, or cropping, fix that before animating; the way to do it is in How to create professional effects in your photos.. The movement draws the eye to the edge and magnifies the defect.
Parallax playback that comes pre-installed on mobile phones: Google Photos and iPhone
On Android and iPhone, Google Photos creates cinematic photos without installing anything: open the photo, swipe up, tap Create, and then Cinematic Photo; the app generates the video with a 3D effect, and you tap Save. The steps are in the... Google Photos Help Center. You don't choose the direction or speed, and that's why this path comes first: in twenty seconds you know if your photo can handle the effect.
On iPhone 12 or newer with iOS 26, the lock screen automatically creates a parallax effect. In Settings, tap Wallpaper, then Add New Wallpaper, then Photos, and slide the top bar to the Space Scene tab. When you choose a photo, the message "Generating space scene" appears, and when it disappears, the image responds to the device's movement. The 3D effect only appears on the Lock Screen, not the Home Screen. It's all in the Apple's page about background images, along with the Depth Effect, which places the person in the photo in front of the clock.
Motionleap: arrows, anchors, and the rotating camera
Motionleap (formerly Pixaloop, from Lightricks, the same company behind Facetune) is an app where you draw the movement instead of choosing a pre-made one. On the Play Store it has a 4.3 rating with over 343,000 reviews and 50 million downloads; on the App Store it appears as "Motionleap: 3D photo animation", with a 4.8 rating and about 21,000 reviews. The description summarizes: dynamic animations, such as moving clouds or waves, with control over every detail, at 24 frames per second.
- Import the photo Open the animation tool. Draw short arrows in the direction of movement: from left to right in the clouds, from top to bottom in the waterfall. Parallel arrows give natural movement; crossed arrows create a swirl.
- Place anchors (The pins) are at the boundary between what moves and what remains still, like the outline of the face. Without an anchor, movement leaks away and the person melts away.
- Use the freeze brush. To paint the areas that cannot move. Paint with a margin.
- Adjust the speed until the loop closes smoothly. Slow movement is more convincing than fast movement.
- For parallax, open the camera tools: The app moves the frame, zooming in or rotating it, and the background moves differently from the foreground.
- Sky and overlays These are optional: the sky swap mimics a timelapse, and the overlays add particles, shine, and rain.
With the free account, exports are as videos; direct GIFs and effects marked as Pro require a subscription, with items on the Play Store ranging from R$ 3.49 to R$ 999.99. Take your first photo for free and only then decide if the plan is worthwhile.
Animate the photo with arrows, anchors, and a freeze brush; change the sky, apply overlays, and export as a video.
VIMAGE: ready-made effects, cinemagraph and parallax without drawing.
VIMAGE takes the opposite approach: instead of drawing arrows, it offers a library of animated effects (rain, snow, smoke, light) that you drag over the photo and adjust in intensity, direction, and speed. Its own listing on the Play Store presents the app as a creator of cinemagraphs, parallax, and 3D effects, with AI-powered sky replacement and high-resolution export. It has a 4.5 rating with 193,000 reviews and 10 million downloads; on the App Store it's called "Vimage: moving photos," with a 4.8 rating and fewer than 400 reviews: its home platform is Android.
The process is short: choose the photo, tap the effect, position the layer, adjust intensity and speed, and use the parallax or 3D tool for camera balance. What separates the free from the paid version is the export: without a subscription, the video comes out with the app's watermark, and reviews on Play, answered by the developer, confirm that it only disappears in the Pro plan. In-app purchases range from R$ 2.69 to R$ 549.99.

CapCut: the “3D Zoom” of Reels and TikTok
The effect where the person stands still and the camera dips into the photo became a craze thanks to CapCut, still the quickest way to repeat the trend with several photos in sequence. CapCut is a video editor, not a photo editor: 1 billion downloads and a 3.4 rating on Play, with almost 13 million reviews, and 4.7 on the App Store.
Two paths:
- Based on the models: Open the Templates tab, search for “3D Zoom”, choose one with the same number of photos you have, tap to use the template, and select the images. The app fits each photo into the zoom synchronized with the beat.
- Regarding the new project: Create a project with the photo, go to Effects, search for "3D Zoom" and apply it to the clip. Leave each photo two or three seconds long; any longer and the zoom loses its impact.
When the goal is to assemble the entire sequence with soundtrack, transitions, and subtitles, comparing editors is key. 5 best apps for creating viral videos on your phone. CapCut is free with in-app purchases ranging from R$ 0.90 to R$ 4,599.00 per item; some effects and models carry the Pro label.
Video editor with ready-made templates; search for 3D Zoom in the Templates tab to animate a sequence of photos with music.
Picsart (1 billion downloads, 4.1 rating) appears on every list of its kind, but its description mentions background removal, collage, and montage; for animating photos, the three apps above can do the job in fewer taps.
How much does it cost and where does the money come from?
All three apps are free to install and operate on a subscription basis, generally weekly, monthly, or annually, plus individual effect packages. The offer screen appears on the first launch and closes with an X.
| App | Free layer | Signature | In-app purchases (Play) |

The store's shopping range includes different products and doesn't, by itself, indicate the price of the subscription you need. Check the duration, renewal, included features, and total cost on the subscription screen. First, compare the preview and export of one of your photos: paying for extra features doesn't guarantee that the cropping or depth estimate will be correct.
Export: MP4 to post, GIF to chat, live scene to screen
For Reels, TikTok, and WhatsApp status, export as a vertical MP4 (9:16), three to six seconds long, with a closed loop: the video ends at the frame where it started, and the app repeats it seamlessly. If the photo is horizontal, the app crops the sides; frame it before animating.
The GIF is only good for conversations and stickers: it has 256 colors per frame, weighs more than an MP4, and kills the gradient effect in the sky. In Motionleap, it lags behind the Pro version; for WhatsApp, the short video delivers the same effect with better quality.
For the mobile screen, on iPhone 12 and later with iOS 26, the native Space Scene creates a parallax effect on the Lock Screen without an app. On Android, check in Wallpapers if your gallery accepts short videos; if not, the animated photo will be sent to the social network. Mistakes that ruin the effect
- Liven things up. Cinemagraph thrives on the contrast between what moves and what remains still. One region in motion, maybe two at most.
- High speed. A cloud passes slowly; when it rushes by, it becomes a hurricane.
- Forget the anchors. Without pins on the edge of the person, the bottom pulls the shoulder and hair together.
- Parallax group photo. With five faces at similar distances, the depth map guesses and one of them floats.
- Cut out after animating. Cutting the finished video to 9:16 throws away the part of the frame that provided the offset. Reframe it beforehand and export it with a different name.
Apps that disappeared from the store
LucidPix, which the previous version of this post recommended, has disappeared from Google Play: its listing is unresponsive, and searching by name returns other apps. Do not install it via APK from a website; Motionleap and VIMAGE cover what it did. "3D Photo Effect Maker" is a generic name for dozens of clones without an identifiable developer; apps that only present themselves by name, without a Play Store listing, are not included in this list.
Common questions
Does 3D photo photography work on any cell phone?
Google Photos' automatic parallax works on Android and iPhone. Space Scene requires an iPhone 12 or newer with iOS 26. Motionleap and VIMAGE run on standard devices; only exporting takes longer on older phones.
Do I need a photo in Portrait mode?
No. The apps estimate depth from the image. Portrait mode helps because it already separates the subject from the background, which is the most important factor.
Is it possible to do it without paying anything?
Yes. Google Photos delivers cinematic photos without a watermark, Motionleap exports video on the free account, and VIMAGE exports with a watermark. Those who pay get GIFs, extra effects, and clean exports.
What format should I post on Instagram and TikTok?
Vertical MP4 file, three to six seconds, closed loop. Publish as Reels or a video to Stories; posted as an image, it becomes a still frame.
How long does it take to get the first photo?
On Google Photos, it takes less than a minute. On VIMAGE, about five minutes with a ready-made effect. On Motionleap, allow fifteen minutes the first time to learn arrows and anchors; from the second photo onwards, it drops to three or four minutes.
Start by using Google Photos with the best photo you have of a person against a wide background. If you like it, install Motionleap and recreate the same photo, drawing the movement; the difference between the automatic and your control will be apparent in the first export.
