If it was backed up to Google Photos, it stays in the trash for 60 days; without a backup, 30 days. On iPhones, the Recently Deleted album keeps photos for 30 days. The trash bin in Samsung and Xiaomi galleries keeps photos for about a month and shows on the screen how many days are left. Restoring from any of them takes less than a minute and doesn't require any app.

After noticing the loss, avoid making unnecessary cleanups or changes until you check the recycle bins and backups. These actions can remove copies that would still be useful. The priority is to find out where the image was located and if there is a way to restore it through the service itself.

This guide is about the clock and the order: the first hour, each trash can with its menu path, the backups, and only at the end, the scanning app.

The first hour: no installation, just looking.

The deletion behavior depends on the storage and application. While the image is in the recycle bin, there is a restore option offered by the service. After permanent deletion, encryption, memory reuse, and other features may prevent recovery. Don't assume the file remains intact waiting for a tool to find it.

Do not install anything, not even the recovery app. A new app saves tens of megabytes, and the system can choose exactly the part where the photo was located.

Don't take photos or record videos until you've finished looking through the trash. One minute of 4K video is over 100 MB and will start consuming free space.

Turn off WhatsApp's automatic media download (Settings, Storage and data) and, if you can go a few minutes without a network connection, turn on airplane mode.

Open the trash folders in the order of the next section: manufacturer's gallery, Google Photos, Google Files, and, on iPhone, Recently Deleted.

Check the cloud backup via your browser, or from another device if you have one nearby.

Only after that, if all else fails, consider a scanning app.

Here's a time-saving detail: the trash bin that holds the photo is the one from the app you deleted it from. If you deleted it in the Samsung gallery, look in the Samsung gallery's trash bin. If you deleted it in Google Photos, the trash bin is the one from Google Photos. On recent Android versions, both may show the same item, so check both, but start with the correct one.

The trash cans, one by one.

Samsung, Xiaomi, and Motorola Gallery

On your Samsung device, open the Gallery, tap the three-line menu in the bottom corner, and go to Trash. Each item shows how many days it will take to be permanently deleted; the default is 30. Press and hold the photo, select the desired option, and tap Restore. It will be returned to the original album with the original date.

On Xiaomi devices, the path is Gallery, Albums, Trash (in some versions, within the Gallery settings). The time limit is also around 30 days and appears on the screen next to each photo. Motorola, in recent models, uses Google Photos as its gallery, so skip to the next section.

Empty trash bin? Some photo galleries allow you to disable it in the settings, and then the deletion is permanent. The photo may still be in the cloud, and that's where we'll go.

Google Photos: 60 days with backup, 30 without.

Open Google Photos, tap Collections (or Library in older versions), and then tap Trash. The rule, published in Google Photos Help Center, Here's the rule: photos with backups stay in the trash for 60 days; photos without backups stay for 30 days. Select the photo and tap Restore. It will return to the gallery and your account, with the original date and album.

If the photo was deleted on a computer or another phone with the same account, the trash bin is the same: go to photos.google.com in your browser and open Trash in the sidebar menu. This allows you to check from any device, including someone else's phone nearby, without affecting your own memory.

Google Photos

Gallery with cloud backup and a 60-day trash can for backed-up photos, 30 days for unbacked photos.

4,6

View on Google Play

Google Files: the trash can that nobody remembers.

When you delete files using Google Files, including downloaded photos and media received on WhatsApp, the file is sent to the Files app's own trash bin, which is stored for 30 days. What backups still hold the photo?

If the trash can is already empty, the next stop isn't the sweeping app. It's the copy that some service made without you noticing.

Google Photos backup. If backup was enabled, the photo was sent to the account before being deleted from the manufacturer's gallery, and the copy remains on photos.google.com. Deleting from the Samsung or Xiaomi gallery removes the file from the device, not the copy in the cloud. Only photos deleted within Google Photos are removed from the cloud.

iCloud Photos. It works the other way around: iCloud syncs the deletion across all devices. What's saved here is the iCloud backup made before the deletion, which can be restored on a deleted iPhone, at the cost of losing anything that came after that backup.

Google One backup. It stores app data, SMS messages, and device settings; photos are uploaded via Google Photos. It's useful for switching phones, not for recovering a single photo.

Copy on the computer. DCIM folder that you copied when switching devices, WhatsApp chat export, old SD card in a drawer. The SD card read by a computer reader, by the way, is the only scenario in which a deep scan works without root access, because the computer reads the card directly.

Who sent it or who received it. A photo shared on WhatsApp, Telegram, or via email remains on the other person's device and in the conversation's media.

If the photo disappeared without you deleting anything, there's a different possible explanation: a hidden folder, an outdated gallery catalog, or a faulty memory card. This diagnosis can be found in... A guide that organizes the search for the way the photo disappeared..

Why does the recovery app launch last?

Installing a recovery app writes dozens of megabytes to memory. Android decides where to write it, and the space marked as free, where your photo still resides, is a candidate. The app that promises to find the photo may be the very one that permanently deletes it.

The second reason is the access limits imposed by applications. Android restricts what third-party tools can analyze, and access to shared files does not equate to unrestricted memory reading. Avoid unlocking the bootloader or rooting after data loss: the procedure can erase data and does not guarantee recovery.

Third: running a memory cleaner now is counterproductive. It deletes caches and thumbnails, which are exactly what a non-root recovery app can read. Leave the cleaning for later; when the time comes, the mobile phone memory cleaning guide It shows where the space disappears without needing a cleaner.

Scanning app: what it returns on Android today

With the trash bins empty and no known copy, a search tool can be attempted within its limitations, but it may not find the original. DiskDigger's entry states that non-root searches are limited and search caches and thumbnails. Examine the resolution of the results before treating them as recovered photos.

Still, it has its place. A 300-pixel photo is better than none, and when the app finds the original version, usually because the file was still in the catalog or on an SD card, it saves it wherever you tell it to. Save it directly to Google Drive or a new folder, never to the same original folder, to avoid overwriting everything. If you go that route, the Guide to Android recovery apps It compares the options and shows the step-by-step process for each one.

DiskDigger photo recovery

Scanning for deleted photos; without root access, it only reads cache and thumbnails, as the fact sheet itself states.

3,1

View on Google Play

One more trash can for next time.

Dumpster offers trash and recovery functions on Android. Only a backup solves the problem.

The memory suffered physical damage. A cell phone that fell in water or broke and won't turn on: no app helps, and the repair service can only recover what was already in the cloud.

Prevention starts with a verified backup and a review routine. Activate the chosen feature, wait for completion, and open some images from the destination to verify. Recycle bin timeouts depend on the application and do not apply after a permanent deletion.

Common questions

Is it possible to recover photos that were deleted several months ago?

The recycle bin has a limited lifespan, but an independent copy may have existed for much longer. Look for accounts, devices, and backups used at that time. The age of the photo, in isolation, does not determine the outcome: what matters is the existence of a copy or recoverable data.

Do I need root on Android to recover photos?

For trash cans and backups, no. For a full memory scan, yes, and unlocking the bootloader to root will erase the device. In practice, rooting only makes sense on a phone that was already rooted before the photo disappeared.

Does the iPhone have native photo recovery?

Yes. The Recently Deleted album is stored for 30 days and also appears on iCloud.com. There is no scanning app for iPhones: iOS doesn't allow any app from the App Store to read the device's memory. Programs that promise this run on a computer via cable.

Can I recover deleted videos as well?

In the trash and backups, videos follow the same rules and timeframe as photos. Scanning is more difficult: videos are large, occupy a lot of memory, and often return corrupted or incomplete.

I accidentally emptied the trash can. Is it still possible?

Emptying the trash ends the restoration process it offers. A separate copy may exist on another device, in another conversation, or in a backup, but this should not be assumed. In Google Photos, emptying the trash also deletes the item from that account; having previously backed it up does not undo the permanent deletion.

Open the gallery's trash folder now, before doing anything else on your phone. If the photo is there, tapping Restore will fix it; if not, follow the table in order and leave the scan app for last.

Read also

Recovering deleted photos from the gallery: the process changes depending on when the photo is gone.

Recovering deleted photos on Android: what DiskDigger finds without root access

Recovering deleted photos on iPhone: trash, iCloud, and backups

Memory cleanup: how to choose the app that frees up space on your phone.

The photo you deleted today still exists.
