Let me be blunt: the mobile player doesn't read the file name. It reads a hidden label inside the MP3 file, the ID3 tag, which contains the title, artist, album, and cover art. An empty tag means the best-named song in the folder becomes "Unknown Artist," alongside 300 others in the same situation.<\/p>\n

This is what turns a collection of years into a disorganized list: \u201ctrack (1).mp3\u201d next to \u201ctrack (2).mp3\u201d, album cover art on half the songs, the same singer spelled in three different ways. No streaming app solves this, because the problem lies in the files you already have.<\/p>\n

Why does the library get messy?<\/h2>\n

An MP3 file can carry a metadata block called ID3 (currently in version ID3v2). FLAC and OGG use Vorbis Comment, and M4A has its own fields, but the logic is the same: title, artist, album, track number, genre, year, and cover art are inside the file, and the player assembles the Artists, Albums, and Genres tabs from them. The file name only comes into play when the tag is empty. That's why you get "Unknown Artist" with hundreds of tracks and the same album twice, because one song has "Legi\u00e3o Urbana" and another has "Legiao Urbana".<\/p>\n

Embedded cover or folder.jpg<\/h3>\n

The cover art exists in two places. Embedded, it's recorded within each file and accompanies the music wherever it goes. In a separate file, it's a folder.jpg or cover.jpg in the album folder: simply copy the track to another location and the cover art is left behind. Albums with half the tracks lacking cover art almost always combine files from different sources.<\/p>\n

Swapped accents and duplicates<\/h3>\n

The old ID3v1 tag has a limit of 30 characters per field and does not recognize UTF-8; therefore, \u201cM\u00fasica\u201d becomes \u201cM\u00easica\u201d. Duplicates arise when the download button is pressed twice: the browser saves \u201ctrack (1).mp3\u201d and the player displays the same song in sequence. Both can be resolved on the phone itself.<\/p>\n

What your phone can already do without installing a player.<\/h2>\n

Before downloading anything, test what's already on your device. Android maintains a media catalog, the MediaStore, which indexes all audio files in visible folders; a file called .nomedia inside a folder tells the media catalog to ignore that content; players that scan folders directly may behave differently. Google Files (rated 4.7 on Play, over 5 billion downloads) plays music and finds duplicates in the cleanup tab, which already eliminates repeated downloads. On Samsung devices, Samsung Music (rated 4.5, with over 1 billion downloads) organizes by Track, Album, Artist, Genre, Folder, and Composer, and plays MP3, AAC, and FLAC files; the description doesn't mention editing tags. On iPhones, your own files are added through synchronization with the Music app on Mac or Apple Music for Windows.<\/p>\n
