In a bar karaoke, the music plays, you sing, and that's it: nobody records it, nobody listens to it later. On a cell phone, the logic is reversed. The app puts the instrumental track in your headphones, scrolls the lyrics on the screen, and records your voice over it, on a separate track. The result is a file that you edit, tune, and publish, and that another person, in another country, can complete with a second voice. Smule's listing on Google Play mentions singers from over 190 countries doing exactly that.

One technical detail determines whether the recording comes out clean or muffled: the headphones. With wired headphones, the bass goes into your ear, the microphone picks up only the voice, and the two tracks are aligned. Without headphones, the microphone records the bass coming from the speaker along with the voice, and the result is an echo. With Bluetooth headphones, the sound arrives a fraction of a second late, and you sing out of sync without realizing it.

I checked the app stores in September 2026: Smule, StarMaker, WeSing, and KaraFun have active listings on Google Play and the App Store; Yokee has disappeared from the Play Store. None of the four offer their entire catalog for free, and that's what this guide highlights.

How mobile phone karaoke works internally

Every karaoke app combines three layers. The first is the instrumental backing track: a version of the song without the lead vocals, licensed by the app or re-recorded by hired musicians, which explains why the same hit song exists in one app and is missing in another. The second is the synchronized lyrics, timed with the backing track so the screen highlights the correct part at the right time. The third is the recording: the app captures your voice on its own track, aligned with the backing track, and only then mixes the two.

This separation is what allows for everything the bar doesn't. Because the voice is on its own track, the app applies reverb, corrects pitch, lowers the volume of the backing track, changes the key of the entire song to fit your vocal range, and, in duets, fits another person's voice into the empty half.

Wired headphones first: the delay that ruins the recording.

The problem has a name: latency, the interval between the sound leaving the app and reaching your ear. With a cable, it's negligible. With Bluetooth, the audio needs to be compressed, transmitted, and decompressed, and your voice enters the recording offset from the base. The StarMaker's specifications mention an adjustment to reduce latency in the editor, but the simplest way is to avoid creating the delay altogether.
